Sasha Bronner: Crying in the Bathroom After Titanic 3D

I thought I knew what I was getting into when my friend and I purchased tickets for Titanic in 3D. After all, I'd seen it many times as a wide-eyed middle schooler. I was the intensely romantic 13-year-old James Cameron had in mind when he released his epic tale of love and loss in 1997. I fell deeply in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, as did my many girlfriends, and we cried throughout Titanic each time we saw it in the theater.

Fast forward 15 years: Driver's licenses, championships, proms, college applications, falling in love for the fist time, losing our virginity, off to college, declaring majors, studying abroad, immersing ourselves in art and film and music and adult life. First jobs, paychecks, apartments, relationships, car insurance and Facebook and Twitter and Pinterest.

I thought it would be fun, kitchy and nostalgic to watch Titanic in 2012, this many years later. I expected cheers and maybe even laughter at the most quintessential moments, and there was a little of that: hoots when Leo bellows "I'm the king of the world!" and cheers when Rose's hand slams against the fogged up window during their steamy love-making session.

But what I didn't expect was the intense sadness that wafted through the theater like smoke as the film drew dark. I didn't expect to feel my throat grow tight or my stomach knot when fear on the boat turned to desperation and finally to death. The overwhelming sadness of Titanic was not something I remember well, or well enough. Tears are really not an accurate word to describe what happened to us in the theater. Faucets were smashed open onto our cheeks, there was uncontrollable sobbing; a feeling of intense personal loss.

And yet, we all know what happens in Titanic. There were no surprises. Nothing had changed in the film (the addition of 3D was meaningless, and only added a pain on the bridge of my nose where the clunking glasses rested for three hours). What had changed -- we suddenly realized -- was us.

The heavy weight of despair unleashed upon two 27-year-old women was much stronger than it was for us as girls. And some might think an optimistic and heart-yet-unbroken pre-pubescent girl would cry more than anyone else when Jack dies or when Rose blows the whistle, keeping her promise to him. But that is untrue.

If there had been a hidden camera, the video would already be viral on Youtube. Equal parts embarrassing and perplexing, our tears were neither soft nor discreet. They were body-shaking sobs, cries bordering on hysteria that provoked such emotional havoc within us that I had to wear my gigantic 3D glasses into the lights of the lobby and straight into the women's restroom.

And it was there that a small epiphany occurred. For it was not just us two sad sacks drying our faces in the gold illuminating light of the Arclight Theater restroom. It was every woman. "I was just not prepared for that," one 20-something said as she wiped watery mascara from her eyes. "I actually feel like someone just died," another said. Big sighs and deep inhales floated from every corner of the restroom. "I need a Xanax," one woman uttered from behind a closed stall door, and everyone laughed. But as I looked around at women of all ages who had certainly seen the film years before as younger women, I realized that the more life you have swept behind you, the more it hurts to see it swept away.

Sure, at 13 it felt like we understood how sad it all was: the sinking of the ship, the frozen bodies bobbing dead in the Atlantic. Sure, it felt like we understood Rose's loss and Jack's sacrifice. But we didn't. And that is because we had not yet experienced real love. At 13 we think we know love, we think we want love. But at 27 we have loved and been loved, deeply.

Everyone was embarrassed. There was not a single woman in the restroom who didn't have tears on her cheeks or red in her eyes. Some were actually still crying. Titanic unleashed emotions stronger in 2012 than perhaps they did for the young audience in 1997. As we exited the theater onto Sunset Boulevard, we checked our iPhones, sipped the last of our Sprites, validated parking tickets and even tried to talk about what to eat for dinner -- but all I could ask myself again and again was, "How could she go on living without him?"

Customers acquired through Google search advertising more valuable than previously thought

In a down economy where advertisers are concerned about every dollar spent, a team of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis has developed a new method of measuring the effectiveness of Google search advertising, taking into account not only online sales, but goods or services purchased off-line as well

The 2012 Olin Award-winning paper, "Measuring the Lifetime Value of Customers Acquired from Google Search Advertising," finds that the conventional method of measuring the return on investment of online search ads is limited and fails to take into account the potential for "cross-channel sales spillover."

By measuring only online transactions, current measurement methods also fail to consider the long-term profit impact of new customers.

The paper is written by Tat Chan, PhD, associate professor of marketing at Olin Business School, Ying Xie, PhD, associate professor of marketing, and doctoral student Chunhua Wu.

They will share the Olin Award's $10,000 prize for relevant and performance-enhancing applications to critical management issues. The Olin Award for faculty research was initiated in 2007 by Richard Mahoney, executive-in-residence at Olin and former chairman and CEO of Monsanto Co.

A panel of prominent business executives and educators review and judge a range of research papers submitted to the competition authored by faculty of the Olin Business School.

Chan and his colleagues have developed an empirical method that estimates the lifetime value of customers acquired from search advertising by using multiple data sources. This new method provides advertisers with a more complete measurement of the value of customers acquired via Google.

Although the average cost per click using Google search advertising increased from around 25 cents in 2004 to almost 80 cents in 2007, it returns a value of about $10 per click for each keyword, the study suggests.

"This is very important for the advertising industry," Chan says. "And also I think it is important for Google itself. They want to really show their customers, their business clients, how effective search advertising is."

Google's total advertising revenues in 2010 were $28 billion, up from $439 million in 2002.

One of the major advantages of search advertising is that it creates a better fit between potential customers' needs and the advertised message. By reaching out to a large audience with immediate interest in the product advertised, search advertising provides a platform for advertisers not only to stimulate sales among existing customers but to also acquire new customers and grow business.

By merging web traffic and sales data from a small-sized U.S. firm, the researchers created an individual customer-level panel that tracks all repeated purchases, both online and off-line, and tracks whether or not these purchases were referred from Google search advertising.

Their results show that customers acquired through Google search advertising have a higher transaction rate than customers acquired from other channels. After accounting for future purchases and spillover to off-line channels, the calculated value of new customers using this new approach is much higher than the value obtained using conventional methods.

"The conventional method normally just looks at online transactions, that are one-time transactions," says Ying Xie, PhD, associate professor of marketing. "But in our method we propose that we should think about the customer's lifetime value.

"In their lifetime, they could be an active customer, repeatedly making purchases. The cumulative amount of these purchases -- that's the profit stream we should take into account."

The conventional method to measure the return of Google search advertising is to compare the online transaction profit generated from Google referrals with the cost of search advertising within a fixed time period.

Chan and his colleagues find that this has overlooked two important factors in profit calculation -- multi-channel distribution is more prevalent in the Internet age and customer lifetime value is now widely used in many industries as a key marketing asset metric.

To estimate the customer lifetime value, the researchers merged three data sources, all available to advertisers in different industries, to construct customer panel data tracking online browsing history, as well as repeat purchases from both online and off-line channels.

They developed an integrated model of customer lifetime, transaction rate and gross margin. Based on their model's estimates, they find that the firm would incur a loss of $48 on average to acquire a new customer if using the conventional method.

After accounting for sales spillovers across channels and the long-term effect, the estimated value of customer acquisition is as high as $950 per customer.

"We know that advertising is important for business," Chan says. "We just don't know how we should invest or how effective it is. Online search advertising is increasing rapidly. It is very important for a lot of advertisers."

The study concludes that current method of measuring dramatically undervalue those customers and the new multi-channel evaluation provides a better and more accurate measurement for companies to gauge their investment in online search advertising.

Here are four diet truths to help you achieve your goals:

Cutting out sweet drinks is non-negotiable. Sweet tea, soda, and flavored and sweetened milks, waters, and coffees all have to go. Drink plain water, low-fat milk, and sugar-free drinks instead. A study of 810 adults between 25 and 79 years old showed that after 18 months, those who cut out sweet drinks had greater weight loss than those who cut down on food calories. One possible reason: While your body lets you know when it is full of food, there is no way for your body to tell you when you?ve maxed out on liquid calories.
Physical activity helps counting calories. Being physically active?burns calories while it improves your overall health. Aim for 30 minutes a day most days of the week. A brisk 30- to 45-minute walk burns 100 to 200 calories. If you can burn 200 calories through exercise, you only have to cut out 300 calories in food or drink to reach your daily calorie-cutting goal.
Strategically eating less drops weight.?A study of 811 overweight people who participated in four popular diets found that whether diets were low-fat, high-protein, or a combination didn?t matter ? weight-loss success depends on cutting out calories. In fact, you can continue to eat filling portions if you simply replace high-calorie foods with low-calorie foods that contain a lot of water, such as fruits and vegetables. A study of 97 obese women who ate either a low-fat diet or a low-fat diet with additional fruits and vegetables found that those who emphasized fruits and veggies lost up to five pounds more.
Journaling leads to success.?Counting calories is easier if you write down (or type in) what you eat, including serving sizes and details such as condiments you may have added. ?Research has shown that exercise and journaling really make a difference in long-term weight management,? says Gail Curtis, assistant professor at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, N.C. A detailed journal will help you identify your successes and pinpoint where you can cut additional calories or replace high-calorie foods with low-calorie ones.
